Snowshoe Mountain – then and now

Today, Snowshoe Mountain in West Virginia is considered to be the premier ski destination for Mid-Atlantic and Southeast skiers. Winter enthusiasts will have their fill of activities to choose from – whether it’s the terrain park for the snowboarders, uphill skiing, night skiing, tubing – it’s all on offer at Snowshoe Mountain. But winter is only half the story at Snowshoe.

Over the years, Snowshoe has evolved into a great  year round resort with the creation of an excellent network of mountain bike trails, a Gary Player-designed golf course and great opportunities for hiking and watersports. The region experiences all four seasons and is an ideal playground with stunning views and the vast unspoiled wilderness. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation or some combination thereof, you’ll find it at Snowshoe.

From skiing and snowboarding in the winter to mountain biking and golfing in the summer, Snowshoe Mountain has something for outdoor enthusiasts in every season.

Looking back

Snowshoe Mountain first opened for skiing on December 13, 1974. While Snowshoe Mountain is the name of the resort, the resort is situated on Cheat Mountain, part of the Allegheny Mountains, in Pocahontas County. The resort is spread across 244 acres which includes not only Snowshoe mountain, but also the Silver Creek area.

The area has a long logging history and this storied past lives on in the naming of trails and lifts on the mountain. You can learn more about terms like Gandy Dancer, Ballhooter and Hootenanny on this Snowshoe Blog.

Snowshoe has so much to offer

Even though Snowshoe started out as a ski resort, the vision was always there for it to evolve into a year round playground. In 2023, the bike park at Snowshoe celebrated its 20th anniversary. The venue has been a favorite stop on the UCI World Cup circuit drawing elite racers from around the world. In 2024, Snowshoe will host the UCI Cross Country Marathon World Championships.

Snowshoe Mountain’s location makes it an ideal destination for a vacation home. Situated in the heart of West Virginia, it offers easy access from major cities such as Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh. Whether you are looking for a quick weekend getaway or an extended vacation, Snowshoe is conveniently located within a few hours’ drive from these metropolitan areas.

The resort offers a thriving village which is uniquely located at the top of the mountain. The village offers a number of dining options and guest services to meet your every need. The Snowshoe community has expanded beyond the village to include the Soaring Eagle Lodge, and now the brand new construction underway in the South Bowl. The Sanctuary at Snowshoe Mountain is the ideal location for a vacation home where you can create your most treasured family memories.

The resort at Snowshoe Mountain is situated at 4,848’ elevation, one of the highest points in West Virginia’s Allegheny Mountains. Beyond the resort, there is unmatched wilderness in every direction for you to enjoy. There are no less than five state parks, national and state forests, rivers, covered bridges, a scenic railway and so much more to explore in the area.

New construction is underway and there will be a few homes coming on the market over the next few weeks and then more early next year. If you’re ready to consider a vacation home for your family, come take a look at what we’re creating at The Sanctuary.
